Abstract
The intermediate phases W2As [1] and WAs2 [1 to 5] have been definitely identified in the W-As system. A phase analogous to Mo5As4 does not exist in the binary system, but appears in the W-Ti-As system at the approximate composition (W0 6Ti04)5As4. The occurrence of a phase W4AS5 is suggested by a rather complex X-ray pattern. W2As always contained free tungsten [1]. A monoarsenide WAs was reported [6]. The existence of a phase W2As3 has been postulated for the W-Ga-As system [7]. WAs2 produced from the elements at 620°C in a sealed tube (5 h, slight excess of As) had the composition WAs1954 (66.15 at% (44.3 wt%) As) [4]. It decomposes readily at low temperatures [1]. For reviews of the system, see [8 to 10].
