Der Mensch achtet auf bestimmte Ereignisse in der Umwelt, nimmt bestimmte Konstellationen wahr, lernt Zusammenhänge zu sehen, erinnert sich an Informationen, denkt, löst Probleme, erarbeitet Strategien und handelt nach ihnen — falls er dazu motiviert ist. Wenn wir fragen, was uns und andere lebende Organismen funktionieren läßt, dann stellen wir die Frage nach der Motivation.
