Abstract
The education of employees toward a health-conscious attitude is necessary in areas of the occupational environment entailing a respective risk. Of these, the most common type of occupational dermatosis is hand dermatitis (Rycroft 1992; Van der Walle and Brunsveld 1994). For occupational dermatology, the most important target of preventive efforts is the hands; thus, their psychosocial significance will be illustrated first. In addition, the respective concepts of the occupational physician and the patient as to the cause of skin problems have to be considered and aligned with each other. The results of an empirical study will illustrate this issue. In a third section, the importance of pedagogic aspects in the fields of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, respectively, will be outlined by discussing aspects of “classical” one-to-one consultations, as well as group seminars and workplace visits.
