Abstract
The crisis of the early 1990s, one of the most severe in the history of the automobile industry, has shown that most European car-makers are highly adaptable, able to respond to turbulence, and capable of prompt and far-reaching strategic and organizational change. Even if the demand for cars in 1996 is still below the 1990 peak, intensive restructuring has lowered the breakeven point and allowed profit margins to recover.
