Opposition to innovations — destructive or constructive?

  • Conference paper
The Dynamics of Innovation

Abstract

Innovations are desired. Innovations are given support. No politician, entrepreneur, top manager, professional association official, no economic theorist ever comes out openly against them. Those involved in and affected by new ideas in these institutions will also constantly affirm and re-affirm their readiness to innovate. And yet — these affirmations are often nothing but lip service. To many people, innovations are synonymous with disruption, nuisance, revolution and, in many cases, with nothing more than pointless turbulence. Innovators have to reckon with opponents, and not only in hidebound companies. Even “the most up-to-date firm has a persistent resistance to change”, as Schumpeter found as early as 1912 (Schumpeter 1912, p. 108).

German version: Widerstand gegen Innovationen — destruktiv oder konstruktiv? To appear in: Zeitschrift für Betriebswirtschaft 1999.
