Abstract
Several commercially important plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are not soluble in any solvents at room temperature. They are soluble in o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) or 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) at temperatures above 100 °C and SEC of these polymers is carried out at temperatures above 130 °C. Requirements for solvents used for high-temperature (HT) SEC are high boiling points, i.e. low volatility, good solubility for these polymers and a low viscosity at high temperature, in addition to good compatibility with the stationary phase.
