Abstract
In the chemical industry, process analytics for solids plays a smaller part compared with that for gases and liquids. By comparison, this sub-area of analytics has, in some other sectors of industry, a not inconsiderable importance, as will be shown by some examples. Since solid product flows, as a rule, show spatial inhomogeneity, this point has to be taken into account during sampling. This can, for example, be achieved by the mixing of sample flows taken off at various points or by intermittent taking of samples from the total product flow at certain intervals. Thus, the number and the mass of increments is of essential importance for the assessment of the result. There are a number of standard approaches to the dependence of the mass of an increment on the particle size (Table 4.1) which directly reveal these difficulties [1].
