Abstract
Wolfgang Pauli’s grandfather Jacob W. Pascheles had inherited from his father Wolf a bookshop in Prague which he operated with considerable success so that he was able to acquire a house on the Old Town Square. Interestingly, in the past this house had been a convent of the congregation of the Paulans. Jacob Pascheles was a respected member of the Jewish community of Prague. As elder of the congregation of the well-known ‘Gipsy’s Synagogue’ he had presided over the “confirmation” (bar mitzwah) of Franz Kafka whose family also lived on the Old Town Square. Jacob’s son Wolfgang Joseph, the father of Wolfgang Pauli, was born in Prague on 11 th September 1869 and studied Medicine at Charles University together with Ernst Mach’s son Ludwig There he obtained his doctor’s degree in 1893 [1].
