Abstract
With the likeness before us of the bust, unveiled here today,* to Einstein, the man himself, we are reminded of how in many a talk with him, in some Institute or out of doors, we argued out the weightier problems of physics. As we regard the expression of timelessness which the artist’s work likewise conveys, we must also think of how Einstein’s ideas, detached from their human creator, now continue an independent existence leading to distant regions beyond our ken.
The sad news about Einstein yesterday impressed me very much, I feel that with him a certain chaptre of physics is leaving us. I could not well refuse to write a short article on him for the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung.”

Jerrold Reinach Zacharias (1905–1986) was Professor of Physics at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. His plans at the end of 1955 to test together with his collaborator Rainer Weiss the general theory of relativity using his atomic clocks never were performed because he became involved in other projects.
