Abstract
Chemical sediments are precipitates from natural waters. Solids precipitate from solution when the solution is saturated or supersaturated, and a solution is saturated when the concentration of the solutes exceeds the saturation value, as defined by the mass-action law in middle-school chemistry:
where K is an equilibrium constant, constant at a given temperature and pressure, and (A), (B), (C), (D) are concentrations of chemical components in an ideal solution. The values of a, b, c, d are defined by the chemical reaction
