Die Funktion1 Γ (z) ist eine analytische meromorphe Funktion von z mit einfachen Polen an den Stellen z = - l für l = 0, 1, 2, . . . und den diesbezüglichen Residuen \( \frac{{{{( - 1)}^l}}} {{l!}} \). Sie ist als solche durch die folgenden drei Eigenschaften und die Forderung Γ(1) = 1 eindeutig bestimmt :
