Eine Gleichung der Form
in der neben einer unbekannten Funktion u = u(x 1,..., x n ) in n Variablen auch partielle Ableitungen \({u_{{x_i}}} = \frac{{\partial u}}{{\partial {x_i}}},{u_{{x_i}{x_j}}} = \frac{\partial }{{\partial {x_j}}}(\frac{{\partial u}}{{\partial {x_i}}})\) ... auftreten, heißt partielle Differentialgleichung (abgekürzt: PDG). Sie hat die Ordnung m, wenn m = k + ⋯ + s die höchste tatsächlich vorkommende Ableitungsordnung bezeichnet.
