Zusammenfassung

Konzepte spielen in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung eine zentrale Rolle. Sie erlauben Forschenden, ihren Untersuchungsgegenstand zu strukturieren und der systematischen Erforschung zugänglich zu machen. Sie bilden außerdem die Grundlage für aussagekräftige empirische Messungen. Dieses Kapitel klärt zunächst zentrale Eigenschaften von Konzepten und deren analytische Funktion in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung. Daran anschließend werden Ziele und Strategien der Konzeptspezifikation anwendungsorientiert dargelegt. Die zuvor allgemein dargelegten Merkmale und Funktionen von Konzepten werden dann anhand politikwissenschaftlicher Konzeptualisierungen von Demokratie illustriert. Das Kapitel schließt mit einer Zusammenfassung der zentralen Funktionen von Konzepten in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung und drei Handlungsempfehlungen, die aus diesen Funktionen und den Inhalten des Kapitels folgen.
