Von der Vielheit der Geschlechter

Zusammenfassung

Parents shape the playing environment of their children by choosing toys and thus influence the play of their children. Up to now there has been little empirical research on which evaluation criteria are relevant for parents, how decisions are made when selecting toys in the family setting and what role the category gender plays in the selection process. This is very surprising as gender is currently an integral part of the world of toys. In the production of toys, the focus is increasingly on separate products for girls and boys. This article presents the findings of an interview study with families conducted in the south-western part of Germany. The criteria used by family members to select toys are presented. In addition, the relevance of gender-related assumptions and attributions for the selection and evaluation of toys is elaborated.
