Abstract
Gas makes or breaks economies. This is clear from the consequences of disruption in supply in 2009 within the patchwork of European markets that rely on Russian imports to meet demand. Yet, despite its importance, the trade in natural gas between producers and consumers remained, to a large extent, a black box up until the mid-2010s.
