Kennen Sie das? Raucher führen gerne als Grund, warum sie nicht mit dem Rauchen aufhören, die Geschichte einer Oma oder Tante an, die bereits 100 Jahre alt ist, obwohl sie seit frühester Kindheit raucht. Das Problem bei solchen Erklärungen ist aber objektiv betrachtet, dass die Anekdote, an die sie sich erinnern können, eine zu große Rolle bei ihrer Entscheidung, weiterhin zu rauchen, einnimmt. Eine Überprüfung der medizinischen Statistiken zur Gesundheit von Rauchern sollte ein weitaus gewichtigerer Faktor im Entscheidungsprozess sein. Die Verfügbarkeitsheuristik (Availability Bias beziehungsweise Availability Heuristic) spielt uns häufig einen Streich beim Versuch einer objektiven Wahrscheinlichkeitsschätzung von Ereignissen.
