Wann ist das Risikomanagement besonders erfolgreich? Jetzt werden die meisten wahrscheinlich intuitiv antworten: „Na dann, wenn es möglichst wenige Ausfälle von Kunden und deren Engagements gibt“. Das heißt, die Hauptaufgabe des Risikomanagements ist es, die Risiken möglichst gering zu halten. Der Alpha-Fehler setzt im Risikomanagement genau an dieser Sichtweise an, indem er den Anteil der Engagements ermittelt, die im Betrachtungszeitraum ausgefallen sind und diesen ins Verhältnis zur Gesamtanzahl der Engagements setzt.
