Zusammenfassung
Vielfältige Formen zeitgenössischer Medienkunst zeigen das Ineinandergreifen von feministischer Medientheorie und künstlerischer Praxis. Die Reflexion von Medien mittels künstlerischer Strategien („Doing Media Theory“) ist ein wichtiges Korrektiv gegenüber einer allein mit sprachlichen Mitteln agierenden Theorie.

Ich verwende hier ununterschieden „Avantgardefilm“ und „Experimentalfilm“ für filmkünstlerische Arbeiten, die auf analogen audiovisuellen Medien basieren – von den Anfängen in den 1910er-Jahren bis zur Gegenwart.

Historisch entstanden die „neuen Medien“ im Gefolge des Aufstiegs digitaler Technologien und sind eng mit der Demokratisierung von Computertechnologie verbunden. Lovink (2006) beschreibt „Neue Medienkunst“ als „transitorische und hybride Kunstform, als multidisziplinäre ‚Wolke‘ von Mikro-Praxen“. Der Begriff „neue Medien“ wird bei Manovich (2001, S. 27–61) ausführlich diskutiert.

Die Begriffe „Cyberspace“ und „Virtual Reality“ sind nicht identisch, obwohl sie bisweilen synonym verwendet werden: „Cyberspace is the electronic matrix in which the simulations of virtual reality operate; virtual reality systems are a means to access that space“ (Thornham 2007, S. 129).
