Abstract
The Danish Public Service Media (PSM) system, since the end of the monopoly days with only one public, licence fee-funded broadcaster, has been growing by budding into a very complex conglomerate of 11 independent institutions/companies. They represent a considerable variety concerning their size, legal status and market share. This also applies to their funding. The chapter describes the Danish PSM system and how it is financed with a combination of licence fee, advertising and subscription. Special attention is given to the licence fee and the way it has been developed over the years: in size, in its criteria for charging and how it is regarded by the Danish citizens. In the light of the ‘digital development’, the chapter depicts recent modifications to secure ‘platform neutrality’ and the political debate on possible alternative PSM funding methods. Finally, the chapter discusses PSM funding in relation to accountability and transparency in the Danish context.
