Zusammenfassung
Konzepte sind die zentralen analytischen Bausteine politikwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Konzeptformierung aus zwei Perspektiven: Während empirisch-analytische Ansätze sich seit den Arbeiten von Sartori in den 1970er-Jahren etabliert und fortentwickelt haben, wenden sich in jüngerer Zeit verstärkt auch interpretative Ansätze Fragen der Konzeptformierung zu. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigt sich der Beitrag mit ausgewählten ontologischen und epistemologischen Grundannahmen zur Natur von Konzepten und präsentiert die Vielfalt von Strategien der Konzeptformierung. Anhand von Beispielen aus der politikwissenschaftlichen Forschungspraxis bietet der Beitrag somit eine Anleitung zur vertieften Auseinandersetzung mit Konzepten.

Darüber hinaus kommt dabei hinzu, dass der Populismus-Begriff nicht nur im akademischen Diskurs ambivalent verwendet wird, sondern auch ein Kampfbegriff der politischen Auseinandersetzung ist, wobei das Konzept in verschiedenen Milieus Träger abweichender Inhalte sein kann.

Zulianello (2018) bezeichnet seinen Ansatz explizit als klassisch. Eine nähere Betrachtung zeigt jedoch, dass sein zweites definierendes Merkmal aus einer ODER-Kombination besteht, und damit der von uns beschriebene Mischtyp vorliegt.

Hier ist anzumerken, dass Schaffers Gegenüberstellung empirisch-analytischer und interpretativer Verfahren wohl etwas zu stark kontrastiert. Gerade die Literatur zu conceptual stretching und conceptual travelling stellt hinlänglich klar, dass historische, räumliche und zeitliche Besonderheiten auch aus Perspektive empirisch-analytischer Verfahren eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

Ein ähnliches Problem liegt auch vor, wenn ein Konzept kontinuierlich verstanden bzw. gemessen wird, in Wirklichkeit aber konzeptuell qualitative Brüche (conceptual hedges) vorliegen, die wiederum verschiedene kausale Mechanismen auslösen.
