Zusammenfassung
Ubiquitous Computing und Virtual Reality erscheinen Mitte der 1990er-Jahre als mögliche Zukünfte des Computers. Anhand der Versuche zweier zentraler Protagonisten der beiden Technologien, Mark Weiser und Jaron Lanier, untersucht der Aufsatz im ersten Teil, wie Ubiquitous Computing als Gegenmodell zur Virtual Reality konstituiert wird. Im zweiten Teil wird der Aspekt der verteilten Handlungsmacht genauer untersucht, der Ubiquitous Computing kennzeichnet, um auf dieser Grundlage im dritten Teil anhand der Verwendung des Begriffs „virtus“ bei Isaac Newton auf eine vernachlässigte Möglichkeit hinzuweisen, laut derer man Virtualität auch als fernwirkende Handlungsmacht verstehen kann. Dies wiederum erlaubt es im vierten Teil, Ubiquitous Computing als Technologie einer virtuellen Stellvertretung zu beschreiben, in der verteilte Agenten als infrastrukturelle Stellvertreter der entsprechenden Konzerne agieren.
