Zusammenfassung
Das Legitimitätsdefizit der Europäischen Union ist Gegenstand einer weit verbreiteten und vielgestaltigen Kritik. Allgemein werden direktdemokratische Abstimmungen als Abhilfe angesehen, um den zunehmend aufscheinenden Akzeptanzproblemen demokratischer Repräsentativsysteme beizukommen (Wagschal 2007a: 41). Im Rahmen der EU-Integration scheint dieses Rezept indes nicht aufzugehen.
