„Bilder sind in der Lage ganze Botschaften zu transportieren und selbst komplizierte Sachverhalte einfach darzustellen“ (Pein 2014, S. 400). Gemessen an Facebook erhöhen Bilder die Interaktion „zwischen 120 und 180 Prozent“ (Pein 2014, S. 400), was den allgemeinen Trend für Bildwelten in Social-Media-Kanälen erklärt. Das war eine gute Grundlage für die im Oktober des Jahres 2010 gestartete Foto- und Videosharing Community Instagram. Der Fokus lag und liegt klar auf dem Posten von Fotomaterial. Anfangs war die App lediglich auf dem Smartphone verfügbar – insbesondere nur auf dem iPhone. Die Android-Version wurde erst wesentlich später im April 2012 veröffentlicht. Kurze Zeit danach gab Facebook bekannt, dass Instagram für eine Milliarde US-Dollar aufgekauft wurde (Pein 2014; Aßmann und Röbbeln 2013). Die Nutzeranzahl von Instagram stieg so immens, dass es selbst „das Wachstum von Facebook und Twitter in den Schatten“ (Aßmann und Röbbeln 2013, S. 26) stellte. Lag die User-Zahl Anfang 2012 noch bei 15 Mio. Usern, wurde im Februar 2013 bekannt gegeben, dass die Anzahl der Nutzer auf über 100 Mio. angestiegen sei (Aßmann und Röbbeln 2013).
