Zusammenfassung
In seinem Buch The Interpretation of Cultures formuliert der amerikanische Ethnologe Clifford Geertz (1926–2006) einen bedeutungsorientierten Kulturbegriff, der über die Ethnologie hinausreichend auch in anderen Disziplinen breit rezipiert wurde und wird, so dass Geertz als ein Wegbereiter des cultural turn in den Sozialwissenschaften gelten kann. Seine Essaysammlung, die Material aus ethnologischen Feldstudien auf Bali sowie in Indonesien und Marokko umfasst, markiert einen zentralen Wendepunkt in seinem Werk. Als Schüler von Talcott Parsons war er zunächst einer modernisierungstheoretischen Analyseperspektive verpflichtet, die Kultur vor allem funktional bestimmte.
