Information und wissenschaftliches Wissen bilden die Basis moderner Wissens- und Mediengesellschaften. Wissenschaftliches Wissen durchdringt immer umfassender gesellschaftliche Teilbereiche sowie die Gesellschaft als Ganzes und prägt das Handeln von Einzelpersonen ebenso wie die Entscheidungen politischer, wirtschaftlicher und anderer Institutionen (Gibbons et al. 1994; Nowotny et al. 2001; Weingart 2001).
