Abstract
The current policy priorities at EU level are reflected in the Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. In practice, specific targets have been set for employment and social inclusion among others – both of which can be related to the issue of work and care reconciliation, the more so in the context of demographic developments in both the workplace and community. However, as the Annual Reports of the EU’s Social Protection Committee underline, the current economic and social crisis makes the achievement of these targets improbable, while future societal developments – associated particularly with ageing – mean that the already large gap between the need for and supply of, longterm care is likely to widen.
