Zusammenfassung
Die Einleitung stellt Struktur und Zielsetzung des Handbuchs Filmtheorie vor. Vor dem Hintergrund theoriekritischer Tendenzen in den Geisteswissenschaften insgesamt wie auch in der Filmwissenschaft im Besonderen wird der Wert von Theorie und ihre Funktion im Gesamtkontext des Fachs dargelegt. Die gegenwärtige Lage der Filmtheorie wird vor dem Hintergrund einer Reihe von Entwicklungen skizziert: einer Hinwendung zur empirisch-historischen Forschung einerseits und zu philosophischen Fragestellungen andererseits; ein durch die Digitalisierung vorangetriebener Wandel zu einer postmedialen Konstellation und die Entwicklung des Fachs vor dem Hintergrund von Reformen und Globalisierung.
