Zusammenfassung
Die Repräsentation von Wissen in Bildern geht über die Illustration von Sachverhalten hinaus; sie ist selbst Teil der Erzeugung von Tatsachen. In der Wissenschaftsforschung werden epistemische Bilder als eigenständige Quellen verstanden, denn „Bilder sind Prozesse, Darstellungen, die sich nicht darauf zurückziehen, Gegebenes zu wiederholen, sondern sichtbar zu machen.“ Das Spektrum epistemischer Bilder bezieht jegliche Art von Sprache ein und umfasst daher narrative und visuelle Kommunikation gleichermaßen. Es reicht von Skizzen, die auf theoretischen Überlegungen basieren, zu Bildern der Natur, die an bekannte Ikonografien und Wahrnehmungsgewohnheiten anknüpfen. Bilder in wissenschaftlichen Kontexten gehören ebenso dazu wie in populären Medien.
