Zusammenfassung
In den 1980er Jahren stand die japanische Firma Sony vor einer Entscheidung, die in gleicher Weise typisch für innovative Unternehmensgründer ist: Nach einer Zeit der Ideen- und Konzeptfindung hatte Sony die klare Perspektive, ein portables Miniaturgerät zum Abspielen von Musik zu produzieren. Wenngleich schon seinerzeit die Gesellschaft recht mobil und musikalische Unterhaltung auf Reisen oder bei „Outdoor Activities“ durchaus vorstellbar war, so stellte die neue Produktkonzeption doch einen recht radikalen Wandel bezüglich der Gewohnheiten dar, Musik zu hören. Nicht nur deswegen war Sony sehr darauf bedacht, die Marktfähigkeit der neuen Konzeption zu testen. Auf Basis sorgsamer Marktforschung gelangte Sony zu einem enttäuschenden Ergebnis: Es stellte sich heraus, dass – zumindest aktuell – kein wesentlicher Bedarf bestand, der eine Fortführung der Entwicklung und eine anschließende Vermarktung rechtfertigen würde. Sony stand nun vor einer schweren Richtungswahl.
