Zusammenfassung
Freundschaftsnetzwerke werden häufig als homogen in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Ethnie, Bildung oder Alter charakterisiert (Marsden 1988), und die Größe eines egozentrierten Netzwerks wird häufig als Indikator für die Integration von Individuen gewertet. Laumann und Senter (1976) haben bereits auf die Auswirkungen dieser Zusammenhänge für die Soziale Schichtung und die Soziale Schließung hingewiesen. Dabei wird die Tendenz zur Ähnlichkeit von Freunden häufig durch eine entsprechende homophile Präferenz erklärt (Heider 1977, S. 217 ff.). Neben einer solchen „nachfrageorientierten“ Sichtweise werden aber große Erwartungen hauptsächlich an die Entwicklung einer „supply-side theory of social structure“ geknüpft, welche die Muster egozentrierter Netzwerke auf soziale Unterschiede in den Gelegenheiten des Kennenlernens – also die soziale Strukturierung des Angebots an potenziellen Freunden – zurückführt. Die nachfolgenden Analysen sollen zur Entwicklung dieser angebotsorientierten Theorie beitragen.
