Abstract
Drawing on the holistic footballing philosophy of the former West German team coach Helmut Schön, the authors apply Schön’s contention, that the true ‘Meisterspieler’ must undergo a learning process as much off the field as on it, to David Beckham. Our essay stresses Beckham’s exceptional ability to adapt to different cultures in Europe and the United States, and contrasts his versatility and therefore cultural mobility with that of many other British players who have ventured abroad in the past. His successful personal journey, from very ordinary suburban roots via the northern heartlands of English football, to becoming most recently a globally recognised ambassador for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games, underlines not only his charismatic personality but also his acquired cosmopolitan identity. These qualities, coupled with his extraordinary talents as a footballer and a uniquely global appeal, help to explain the post-modern cultural significance and phenomenon of the Englishman.
