Eine besondere Eigenschaft von Linux ist die große Anzahl von frei verfügbaren Programmiersprachen, die auf den verschiedenen FTP-Servern oder in Linux-Distributionen im Binärformat enthalten sind. Die meisten dieser Werkzeuge stehen kommerziellen Systemen in nichts nach. In diesem Kapitel sollen die verschiedenen Compiler, Interpreter und Tools zur Programmentwicklung unter Linux erläutert und ihre wichtigsten Merkmale genannt werden.
