Summary
The range of application of automatic manipulating systems can be considerably extended by the use of sensors for position detection and identification of production parts. Specifications for such sensors are given and examined under realistic and practical conditions. In order to test the solutions to the various subproblems an experimental system has been set up and tested. It is demonstrated that single flat work-pieces on a conveying belt can be automatically located and identified in less than 150ms with relatively modest effort. The main features of the proposed electro-optic sensor are the special scanning technique for the image converter and the division of the data processing into an efficient analog part and a higher level digital part using a microprocessor.
