Abstract
Diagnostic laparoscopy can provide important information in the emergency setting. It provides a minimally traumatic way to confirm or exclude a diagnosis. Clinical judgment must be used to exclude problems best served by formal laparotomy. The indications for emergency laparoscopy can be conveniently grouped into those related to abdominal pain and those related to trauma (Table 11.1). Other indications are continually emerging, and it is important to individualize patient management in this area.
