Abstract
Mounting evidence has led us to believe that the transport of the solar-wind energy across the magnetopause occurs principally by the ‘recon-nection’ mechanism. According to this mechanism the penetration of the interplanetary electric field into the magnetosphere is expected to accompany the inflow of the solar wind energy. Geomagnetic disturbances resulting from the ionospheric current driven by the penetrating electric field have been identified as ‘DP2’ and ‘DPY’ (or, ‘Svalgaard-Mansurov effect’).
