Abstract
1. Superconductors Under Stress. The phenomenon of superconductivity was first satisfactorily explained by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer [1], who exploited Fröhlich’s idea [2], [3] that the coupling of electrons and phonons in a metal would lead to an attractive term in the interaction between two electrons. Clearly, any procedure which allows the parameters of the metal to be continuously varied will provide a sensitive test of the theory. One such procedure is the addition of alloying elements, but this may introduce complications by turning a “clean” into a “dirty” metal. The application of elastic stress is free from this disadvantage; moreover, the stress can be applied and removed reversibly while the specimen is in the superconducting state.
