Abstract

At the Thirteenth International Low Temperature Conference, held at Boulder, Colorado, in August, 1972, an evening meeting was scheduled at the request of Professor G. E. Uhlenbeck on the origin of the concept of “Quantum Fluids.” I admit that initially I was not greatly in favour of this exercise, firstly because I dislike sessions after dinner, and secondly, because much of the material had been made available in popular form in my book The Quest for Absolute Zero in twelve languages. My first objection was overruled by my host, John Daunt, who had advanced the time of our dinner by half an hour so that we both could appear at the function as “ancient exhibits.” Secondly, I was assured that nothing more would be required except personal recollections.
