Abstract
In this chapter, we consider magnetic properties of metallic systems. Their main characteristic is that their magnetic properties are determined by spatially extended electron states, which form conduction bands. The existence of localized magnetic moments which is quite common in 3d element-based magnetic insulators (Chap. 2), appears in the present case merely as one of several possible types of magnetic behaviour of the system. As a rule, the values of atomic magnetic moments in metals are smaller than those for the corresponding ions in insulators, and they do not necessarily equal an integer number of Bohr magnetons.
