Abstract

Dr Morel reviewed the method developed for studying the release of ACh. The method is based on the specific reactions of two enzymes namely choline oxidase for the assay of choline and acetylcholinesterase for the hydrolysis of acetylcholine. In this way both compounds can be assayed in the same sample. This method will also allow the determination of the ACh during release. KC1 was found to release only a small proportion of ACh because the Ca++ channels become desentisized. The ionophore gramicidine released a much higher proportion of ACh. In tissue samples substances interferring with the assay may be present. They can be renewed by treatment with oxidising substances.
