On the Computation of Transonic Viscous Flows

Summary

Transonic, viscous flows react very sensitive to small disturbances. In numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations it was found that the numerical dissipation can significantly affect the temporal and spatial accuracy in viscous flows, as demonstrated in several examples. The validation of the numerical results by comparison with the experiment renders more difficult, since now uncertainties of both are superposed. In particular cases correlations between numerical and experimental results could be achieved only by “trial and error”.
