Abstract
We have discussed in the previous chapter, how deformability varies with direction. Laboratory and in situ testing have shown that the strength of anisotropic rocks also varies with spatial orientation. Intuitively, both deformability and strength must be affected by the anisotropic character especially if there is symmetry of any kind. The presentation of this chapter follows along the lines of the previous one in focussing on two points:

(i)
the strength behavior of anisotropic rocks in the laboratory and in situ,
-
(ii)
the modeling of this behavior for the different types of rock anisotropy mentioned in Chapter 1.
