Abstract
One of the most remarkable properties of the circadian wake-sleep rhythm of a higher vertebrate is its temporal precision. The cycle-to-cycle variability in period is often far less than 1% of the total interval; a bird or a rodent, kept under constant conditions without external time cues, may awaken day after day at times which are predictable to within 2 to 3 min. Speculation about the physiological mechanism which underlies such astonishing precision has led to the research described in this treatise.
