Betrachtet man die vielfältigen, auf dem Markt befindlichen Produkte - es gibt derzeit einige Tausend unterschiedliche Maschinenbauprodukte - so stellt man fest, daß diese auf sehr unterschiedlichen physikalischen und chemischen Phänomenen beruhen. Grundlagen einer Konstruktionslehre müssen deshalb die Physik, Chemie, Mathematik, Werkstoffkunde, Dynamik, Statik, Festigkeitslehre, Getriebelehre, Thermodynamik, Wärmelehre, Strömungslehre, Optik, Akustik, Elektrotechnik, Fertigungstechnik und andere Wissenschaftsbereiche sein.
