Abstract

The history of the bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (BCG) begins in 1908 when Calmette and Guérin began their work with Lait Nocard, a virulent bovine strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated by Nocard from a cow that had tuberculous mastitis. Calmette and Guérin subcultured the organism every 3 weeks on a glycerinated beef-bile-potato medium. In 1921, after 13 years and 230 subcultures, BCG had lost its virulence for animals (Grange et al. 1983; Gardner 1932; Crispen 1989). The first child immunized with BCG in July 1921 was a newborn whose grandmother had tuberculosis. Since then more than 1 billion children in more than 182 countries throughout the world have been vaccinated with BCG.
