Abstract
“Soilless culture” covers all methods and systems of growing plants without soil, such as water culture, sand culture, gravel culture, aeroponics, tube culture, nutriculture, etc. The word hydroponics was originally used in the United States as a synonym for soilless culture. Likewise, the German Hydrokultur and the English hydroculture have been used to describe this method of farming (Steiner 1976; Jones 1983; FAO 1990).
