Abstract
No discovery of a new essential element for improved plant growth is expected. The list is complete; but what is it about the 16 known essential elements that make them a requirement for most plants? There is no clear answer. Comparison of their location on the ion element tables offers no reason for their being essential. Related chemical elements could have a similar effect on the plant nutrient mix! Why is potassium so dominant in plants and the “related” sodium so dominant in animals? Why is the magnesium ion dominant in the chloroplast and not “relative” like iron?
