Abstract
A variety of agonists interact with surface receptors on their target cells to stimulate inositol phospholipid-specific phospholipase C (PLC; Rana and Hokin 1990; Majerus 1992). Activated PLC catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate to generate two second messenger molecules, diacylglycerol and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3). Diacylglycerol is the physiological activator of protein kinase C (PKC) and IP3 induces the release of Ca2+ from internal stores (Rana and Hokin 1990).
