Abstract
The so-called new types of forest damage (cf. Huettl 1991) are more or less frequently associated with nutritional disturbances. Besides acute nutrient deficiencies also nutrient imbalances occur which eventually result in decline/ dieback or even in complete death of impacted trees or tree groups. Generally, these symptoms are well known. However, at least one of these damage symptoms, namely Mg deficiency, is nowadays found in stands and on sites for which it has so far not yet been described (Fig. 1). The “new” character of this decline type has been verified through historic foliar analysis comparisons (cf. Huettl 1991). Furthermore, a remarkable relationship between Mg supply of the soil and Mg nutrition of trees/stands has been demonstrated by many studies indicating that Mg-deficient trees occur only on soils with insufficient Mg availability (e.g. Zoettl and Huettl 1986).
