Abstract
In the theory of atomic spectra for neutral atoms and ions with small charges the need to take relativistic effects into account very seldom arises, the effects can be included as small corrections. The situation is different for multicharged ions because relativistic effects very strongly depend on the ion charge. We give below the basic information on the Dirac equation for an electron in a Coulomb field necessary for relativistic theory of atomic spectra.
