Abstract
This chapter presents a brief overview of the compartmentation, biosynthesis and degradation of compatible solutes in higher plants, using selected examples to illustrate the present state of knowledge and to highlight some unanswered questions. Reviews by Wyn Jones (1984), Rhodes (1987), and McCue and Hanson (1990b) also cover these topics, and are sources of additional literature citations (see also Somero, this Vol.).
